Grand Canyon. This was the best part.

IMG_8259

We took a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon with a champagne picnic lunch at the bottom. It was crazy beautiful.

Damn, dat dam.

IMG_8253

IMG_8322

IMG_8338We also went pony trekking in the Grand Canyon.

My pony was called Stormy. Stormy did not give one single fuck. We should all be more like Stormy.

Las Vegas itself is insane.  We wandered up and down the strip a couple of times (once with GIANT MARGARITAAAAAS) popping our heads in and out of hotels.  The Venetian’s fake sky creeped me out. The Bellagio fountains are worth hanging around for. We watched KÁ at our hotel, the MGM Grand. Drank gin and tonics the size of my head and played blackjack until 2am. (If you stay at the MGM, you have to go to Coco’s Bakery for breakfast.  It will save your life* (*hangover))

IMG_8181We didn’t spend long in LA. In fact, all we really did was sunbathe in Santa Monica, eat around in Koreatown, Little Armenia and Thai Town and then wander around the walk of fame.  One full day in LA coming at your face.

Where did we eat?

Ham Ji Park: Korean barbeque and salads plus loads of barley water because it was crazy hot outside.
Zion Market (at City Centre): Bean paste pastries with walnuts and korean sweet custard filled sweet buns shaped like fish
Sasoun Bakery: Cheese and onion bourek – like a folded flatbread stuffed with cheese and chopped onions.
Spicy BBQ: Hot Thai chicken soup with sweet Thai tea
Falafal Arax: Honestly the best falafel I have ever eaten.
Panos Pastry: Baklava
Silom Market: Fortune cookie-esque “tacos” filled with coconut cream and sweet egg yolk
Pono Burger: 1/3lb burgers cooked to absolute perfection.  Craft beer, sweet potato fries and their salted caramel bacon milkshake are legend.
Lucky’s Tavern: Craft beer. All of the craft beer.
I also ate a Taco Bell. Not quite sure how I feel about it.  Was a little tipsy.
(Sorry not sorry that this post is pretty much just pictures of food)

First, you will need a road. We picked Route 1.

IMG_8129

Second, you will also need a car.  We picked a new Ford Mustang.

IMG_8154

And then you drive. IMG_8152

We stopped for lunch at Lucia Lodge where the burgers were big but the salads were bigger. And beautiful.

We booked a cheap motel in Cambria.  Not only did it break up the monotony of a 480 mile drive, but it gave us the true road trip feel.  Cambria is perfect for this. It’s a small town with a brilliant craft beer company – Cambria Beer Company – where we sank a couple of pints before dinner.  We ate at Robins for dinner; garlic bread, crab cakes, steak and the most tender and (hate this word) moist pork loin in the history of pork loins.

Setting off for LA early, the sun was beautiful. IMG_8165

Pacific Catch: beautiful coconut shrimp, deep fried oysters and fish
Isa: Californian and french inspired small plate style dining, sharing plates of Dungeness crab salad, blue cheese and walnut salad, rack of lamb, scallops, creme brûlée and honeyed goat cheese
Mel’s Drive-In: American diner food, pancakes, waffles, sunny side up eggs, bacon
Boudin Bakery: Clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls
Home Plate: American diner food with carrot and sweet potato pancakes and the best sultana scones
Craftsman & Wolves: Matcha, pear and ginger scones

Wisdom comes with age.  No.  Wisdom comes with experience.

I was naive when I did the first Good Housekeeping’s Cookery Compendium Challenge. I thought it would be a breeze.  This time, I approached it with caution.

A lot of recipes were just bland…

IMG_7250

Tomato Soup

IMG_7253

Meat & Potato Loaf

Some were surprisingly easy…

IMG_7888

Polish Faworki

Some got a bit sexy…

IMG_7241

Fish Envelopes

Some had unhelpful names…

IMG_7235

Brown Stew

Some, I tried to fail on…

IMG_7911

Six Cup Pudding and Mock Cream

And one was stand out amazing…

Braised Celery Hearts

The Introduction describes the GHCC as “one handsome volume”.  It is.  It’s huge, comprehensive and full of savvy kitchen management tips. It’s obvious I’m not it’s target audience but it’s a good read. We had a good run with these recipes; have I been lulled into a false sense of security?
